We were delighted to host students from Hauraki Plains College for a farm open day visit on Tuesday 24 March 2026.
During their time on farm, students were given a tour of crops currently growing on farm, including potatoes, cabbage, and sweetcorn. This provided a practical introduction to the diversity of crops grown and the research activity underway at Te Ahikawariki.
Following the farm tour, students heard from Franklin Agritech, who spoke about the opportunities available for those looking to build a career in horticulture, including pathways to gain qualifications and develop within the industry.
After morning tea, students had the opportunity to hear from a range of industry professionals:
- Daniel Sutton, Research, Development and Extension Manager, Vegetables NZ
- Nick Wang, Glasshouse Tomato Grower, T&G
- Howe Young, Farm and Operations Manager, Te Ahikawariki and Balle Bros
Each speaker shared insights into their role within the horticulture sector, their career journey, what they enjoy most about their work, and advice for students considering future pathways in the industry. These discussions offered valuable perspective and highlighted the wide range of opportunities available across the sector.
We are also incredibly grateful to Jason Greene from Farmlands Pukekohe, who provided the BBQ to conclude the visit with a sausage sizzle and refreshments, a well-received way to bring the day together.
It was encouraging to see such strong engagement from the students, and we appreciate the opportunity to support their understanding of horticulture and the career pathways it offers.
